Royal Railway: Inside Royal Caribbean’s Immersive Dining Experience

Royal Railway: Inside Royal Caribbean’s Immersive Dining Experience  Imagine boarding a luxury train, watching the scenery pass by and enjoying a multi-course meal inspired by the destinations along your journey - all without leaving your cruise ship. This is the idea behind Royal Railway, Royal Caribbean International’s immersive dining experience that combines food, storytelling and cutting-edge technology to transform an ordinary dinner into an adventure.    Designed to engage all the senses, Royal Railway brings together the atmosphere of a railway carriage, destination-inspired cuisine and a story that unfolds throughout the meal. Guests are invited to become part of the experience, with changing digital landscapes, theatrical elements and carefully designed dishes helping to bring each journey to life.    But what exactly happens during a Royal Railway dining experience, and what makes it different from other restaurants at sea? Here’s everything you need to know about this innovative onboard attraction.      What is the Royal Railway experience?  Royal Railway is Royal Caribbean’s take on immersive dining, sometimes described as “eatertainment”. Rather than simply visiting a restaurant for a meal, guests embark on a themed culinary journey in which the surroundings, food and entertainment all contribute to a wider story.    The experience is designed to make diners feel as though they have boarded a train travelling through another time and place. From the railway-inspired interiors to the digital scenery surrounding the dining area, every element contributes to the illusion of being on a journey.    Throughout the meal, guests experience a combination of storytelling, atmospheric effects and destination-inspired dishes. The result is an experience that sits somewhere between a speciality restaurant and a theatrical performance.    Royal Railway demonstrates how cruise dining can extend beyond traditional restaurants, offering guests another way to enjoy their time onboard.    What happens during a Royal Railway dining experience?  The experience begins before the first course arrives. Guests enter a carefully themed environment designed to evoke the atmosphere of a railway station and dining carriage, setting the scene for the journey ahead.    Once seated, the experience unfolds through a combination of food, technology and storytelling.    1. Step into a railway-inspired setting    The surroundings are central to the experience. Railway-inspired interiors help establish the atmosphere, while the design encourages guests to imagine themselves travelling rather than sitting in a conventional restaurant.    The attention to detail extends beyond the tables and seating, creating a setting that feels connected to the story being told.    2. Watch the scenery come to life    One of Royal Railway’s defining features is its use of digital technology to create immersive surroundings. Screens and visual effects help simulate the changing landscapes outside the train, making guests feel as though their carriage is moving through different locations.    Lighting and sound contribute to the atmosphere, helping the environment change as the experience progresses.    Rather than watching a performance from a separate stage, diners experience the storytelling as part of their meal.    3. Discover a menu inspired by the journey    Food is at the heart of Royal Railway. Each version of the experience features a multi-course menu designed to reflect its particular theme and culinary influences.    The dishes are intended to complement the story, connecting what guests are eating with the places and cultures represented throughout the journey.   Royal Railway’s different themes also mean that the culinary experience can vary depending on which version guests choose.    4. Enjoy storytelling alongside dinner    Royal Railway combines dining with theatrical elements and narration, allowing the story to develop throughout the meal.    The entertainment is integrated into the experience rather than presented as a separate show. This helps create a sense of progression, with the atmosphere, visuals and courses contributing to the journey.    It is this combination of storytelling and dining that makes Royal Railway different from a conventional speciality restaurant.    The food: What can you expect to eat?    Royal Railway offers a multi-course dining experience, with the menu reflecting the theme of the journey.    On Utopia Station, the original experience aboard Utopia of the Seas, the Wild West-inspired setting is complemented by American-influenced dishes. Royal Caribbean has highlighted food such as short ribs and chocolate gold bars as part of this culinary adventure.    The Legend Station experience aboard Legend of the Seas takes a different approach, drawing inspiration from the historic Silk Routes. Its menu explores culinary influences from regions including China, India, Persia, Turkey and Italy, with dishes such as pork and shrimp siu mai and Indian butter chicken.    These different menus demonstrate how the railway concept extends beyond the décor. The food is an essential part of the storytelling, giving each version its own identity.    Menus and individual dishes may change, so guests should check the latest details for their sailing.    How technology brings Royal Railway to life  Creating the illusion of travelling through different landscapes while dining at sea requires careful coordination between design, entertainment and technology.    Royal Railway uses digital scenery, lighting and sound to transform the dining environment as the experience progresses. These elements work together to create a more immersive setting than a traditional restaurant could offer.    The concept also required extensive development and testing. Royal Caribbean’s behind-the-scenes material explores how the team worked on the design, including building a half-scale proof of concept before developing a full-sized train-car prototype.    This process allowed the team to test the space, refine the experience and coordinate the different elements involved in delivering the meal and entertainment.    The result is an attraction in which the technology supports the experience rather than becoming the sole focus. The intention is to make guests feel connected to the journey, with the food, story and surroundings working together.      What makes Royal Railway different from other cruise restaurants?  Royal Caribbean offers a wide choice of onboard dining, from casual eateries and buffet restaurants to speciality venues serving particular cuisines. Royal Railway takes a different approach by making the entire meal part of a themed experience.    Here are some of the key differences:  Dining with a storyline: The meal follows a narrative rather than being simply a series of courses. Immersive surroundings: Digital scenery and atmospheric effects help create the feeling of travelling through another place. A destination-inspired menu: The food connects with the theme and setting of the experience. Entertainment throughout the meal: Storytelling and theatrical elements are integrated into dinner itself. A memorable occasion: The combination of food and entertainment makes it an alternative to a traditional speciality restaurant.  For guests who enjoy trying something new, Royal Railway offers a different way to experience cruise dining. It is less about simply choosing a restaurant and more about taking part in an onboard attraction.    Is the Royal Railway experience worth it?  Whether Royal Railway is right for you depends on what you enjoy most about dining and entertainment.    It could appeal to food lovers who enjoy exploring different cuisines, couples looking for a memorable evening or families who want to try something unusual during their cruise. Guests who appreciate immersive attractions and theatrical experiences may also find it particularly appealing.    The main difference is the atmosphere. Royal Railway is designed to be an engaging, themed experience rather than a quiet, traditional dinner.    It is also a speciality dining option, so an additional charge applies. Prices, availability and booking conditions can vary, making it worth checking the details for your particular sailing before deciding whether to reserve.    If you want to add something distinctive to your cruise itinerary, Royal Railway is an example of how an evening meal can become part of the entertainment.    Where can you experience Royal Railway?  Royal Railway has been developed in different forms, each with its own setting and culinary theme.    Utopia Station – Utopia of the Seas    The original Royal Railway experience takes inspiration from the American Wild West. Guests enjoy a multi-course meal in a railway-themed setting, with the story and surroundings designed around the American Frontier.    Legend Station – Legend of the Seas    The later version takes inspiration from the historic Silk Routes, with a culinary journey influenced by the cuisines and cultures associated with the route from China towards Italy.  The two experiences share the same immersive dining concept but offer different stories, settings and menus. Availability can depend on the ship and sailing, so check Royal Caribbean’s current dining information before booking.    How to book the Royal Railway experience  If you would like to include Royal Railway in your cruise holiday, you can check dining options through Royal Caribbean’s My Royal Cruise planner or the Royal Caribbean app.    It is worth checking the available times, current prices and booking conditions for your sailing in advance, particularly if the experience is high on your holiday wish list.    As Royal Railway is speciality dining, it carries an additional charge rather than being automatically included in the standard cruise fare.    Experience a different side of cruising with Royal Caribbean  Royal Railway takes the idea of dinner at sea in a new direction, bringing together culinary influences, immersive technology and storytelling in one carefully designed experience.    From the moment guests enter the railway-inspired setting to the final course, the aim is to make the meal feel like a journey in its own right. It is an innovative example of how Royal Caribbean continues to develop onboard experiences that go beyond traditional dining.    If you would like to discover more of what the cruise line has to offer, explore our latest Royal Caribbean cruise deals and speak to our Cruise Experts about finding your next holiday at sea.    Frequently asked questions about Royal Railway  Q - What is Royal Railway on Royal Caribbean?  A - Royal Railway is an immersive dining experience combining a multi-course meal with railway-inspired surroundings, digital scenery, storytelling and theatrical elements. Mediterranean cruises from Barcelona.    Later in the season, the programme will become more varied, with open-jaw itineraries covering destinations across Italy, Spain and the Greek Isles.    This programme isn't just about summer.    Following her summer season from Athens, Rhapsody of the Seas will move into a winter programme featuring the Canary Islands, Greece and Portugal.    This opens up an exciting option for travellers looking for a European cruise outside the traditional summer season.    One particularly notable itinerary is a 12-night Christmas cruise to the Canary Islands and I’ve been onboard Legend of the Seas: my honest review of Royal Caribbean’s newest ship

I’ve been onboard Legend of the Seas: my honest review of Royal Caribbean’s newest ship

I’ve been onboard Legend of the Seas: my honest review of Royal Caribbean’s newest ship  There are some cruise ships you step onboard and immediately know you’re going to need more than a few days to explore them properly.    Royal Caribbean’s Legend of the Seas is one of them.    I recently spent time onboard Legend of the Seas during a Mediterranean sailing, getting to experience everything from its restaurants, entertainment and neighbourhoods to the cabin, pools and some of the ship’s headline attractions.    And after spending several days onboard, I can safely say this isn’t a ship you book simply because it is new. Legend of the Seas genuinely gives you a lot to discover.    As Royal Caribbean’s newest Icon Class ship, Legend of the Seas shares plenty with her sisters, Icon of the Seas and Star of the Seas, but there are also some experiences that make this ship distinctly her own. These include Royal Railway – Legend Station, Hollywoodland Supper Club, new AquaDome Market food stalls and a brand-new production of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.    So, what is it actually like to sail on Legend of the Seas?    Here’s my first-hand review, including the things that surprised me, what I loved most and my top tips for making the most of your time onboard.      First impressions of Legend of the Seas  The first thing that hits you when you board Legend of the Seas is the sheer scale of the ship.    It is big. Really big.    But interestingly, I never felt like I was constantly trying to work out where I was. The ship is split into eight distinct neighbourhoods, including Royal Promenade, Central Park, Surfside, Thrill Island, Chill Island and the AquaDome, which gives different areas their own identity.    That makes a difference when you're onboard because instead of feeling like one enormous ship, each area has its own atmosphere.    One minute you can be surrounded by the energy of Royal Promenade, then you can wander through Central Park and find yourself somewhere that feels completely different.    My tip: don't try to see everything on your first day. Take some time to wander around without a plan. You’ll get your bearings much quicker and you'll inevitably find a spot you want to come back to.      The neighbourhoods make exploring the ship part of the experience  One of my favourite things about Legend of the Seas was simply walking around.    There is always something happening.    The Royal Promenade is the social hub, while Central Park offers a much calmer atmosphere. Surfside is designed with families in mind, Thrill Island is where you’ll find the adrenaline-fuelled attractions and the AquaDome combines incredible views with entertainment and dining.    Then there’s the Hideaway, complete with its suspended infinity pool, which offers a very different atmosphere again.    This is one of those ships where you choose to spend your time can completely change your experience.    If you want action, you can find it.    If you want somewhere to sit with a drink and watch the world go by, you can find that too.    And if you’re travelling with a family or a group with completely different interests, that variety is a huge advantage.      My cabin: an Infinite Ocean View Balcony  I stayed in an Infinite Balcony cabin, which gave me the chance to experience one of the cabin concepts that has become such a talking point across Icon Class.    The Infinite Balcony is designed to bring the outside in, with the balcony effectively becoming part of the cabin when the window is opened.    For me, one of the biggest advantages was being able to enjoy the feeling of having an outdoor space without necessarily having to step outside.    And there is something particularly nice about opening the balcony and letting that Mediterranean air into your cabin in the morning.    My cabin tip  Don't underestimate the value of your cabin location.    On a ship this size, you will be doing a lot of walking, so think about where you are likely to spend most of your time when choosing your stateroom.    If you know you’ll be spending your days around the pool deck, a cabin higher up may make sense. If you love Central Park or the Royal Promenade, consider how easy it will be to reach those areas.    And if you're unsure which cabin is right for you, this is exactly where speaking to a Cruise Expert can help.      The entertainment is a major highlight  If you think a huge ship means you’ll spend your evenings wandering around wondering what to do, think again.    I had the chance to experience several different forms of entertainment during my time onboard and one of my highlights was Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.    The production is exclusive to Legend of the Seas, making it one of the experiences you can only see on this ship.    And it isn't just the theatre.    I also watched the AquaTheater show and the ice-skating production at Absolute Zero, as well as experiencing the atmosphere around the ship after dark.    There is something quite impressive about going from a theatre production to an ice show and then finding live entertainment and bars elsewhere onboard.    My tip: check the Royal Caribbean app as soon as you board and start planning your entertainment.    Don't leave every show until the last minute.    Some performances can fill up, and there is so much happening that it is surprisingly easy to accidentally miss something you wanted to see.    Thrill Island: where the adrenaline kicks in  If you're someone who likes your cruise with a side of adrenaline, Thrill Island is going to be high on your list.    This is home to Category 6 Waterpark, with six waterslides, as well as attractions including the FlowRider and Crown's Edge.    Even if you aren't planning to go on every attraction, it is worth heading up there just to see the activity.    And if you're travelling with children or teenagers, this is likely to become one of the most popular areas of the ship.    Top tip for Category 6    Go early.    If there are specific slides you know you want to try, don't wait until the busiest part of the afternoon.    Getting there earlier means you can make the most of the attractions before the area becomes busier - and you'll still have plenty of time afterwards to explore the rest of the ship.    AquaDome is one of my favourite spaces onboard  The AquaDome is one of those places that photographs well, but feels even more impressive when you're standing inside it.    It is home to the AquaTheater, as well as dining and places to sit and take in the views.    One of the biggest changes on Legend of the Seas is the refreshed AquaDome Market, with food stalls offering options including Korean rice bowls, Mexican tacos, New Orleans-style dishes and Spanish-inspired tapas.    This quickly became one of the places I wanted to return to.    My tip: don't just visit the AquaDome when you have a show booked. Go during the day, grab something to eat and actually spend some time there.      Food: you won't struggle for choice  One thing I quickly realised onboard Legend of the Seas is that you could probably have a completely different food experience every day.    The AquaDome Market alone gives you plenty of choice, while the ship also features a huge selection of other dining venues.    Two of the most talked-about additions are Royal Railway – Legend Station and Hollywoodland Supper Club.    Royal Railway is an immersive dining experience inspired by the Silk Routes, while Hollywoodland Supper Club takes inspiration from the glamour of Hollywood's Golden Age.    Even if you're not planning to book specialty dining, I would recommend exploring what is included in your cruise before you decide what extras you actually need.    There is already a lot of choice.    Don't forget the quieter parts of the ship  With everything happening onboard, it would be very easy to spend your entire cruise chasing the next activity.    But one of my top tips would be the opposite.    Slow down.    Find somewhere you like sitting with a coffee.    Walk through Central Park.    Grab a drink in the evening.    Sit and watch the sea.    Legend of the Seas has plenty of big, headline-grabbing attractions, but some of my favourite moments were simply being onboard and taking everything in.    That is something I think is important to remember when sailing on a ship this size: you don't have to do everything.      What surprised me most about Legend of the Seas  Before sailing, I knew Legend of the Seas was going to be big.    What I didn't necessarily expect was how much there would be to do without it feeling like you had to constantly be doing something.    The different neighbourhoods help create that balance.    You can have a day packed with waterslides, shows and activities, or you can completely change pace and spend time around Central Park, the AquaDome or one of the quieter areas onboard.    It makes the ship incredibly flexible.    And that is probably my biggest takeaway from my time onboard.   Legend of the Seas isn't just about one big attraction. It's the variety.    My top tips for sailing on Legend of the Seas    1. Explore the ship on day one    Don't spend your first day only finding the buffet and your cabin.    Walk.    Take the lifts, use the stairs and explore the different neighbourhoods. You'll quickly work out where your favourite areas are.      2. Download the Royal Caribbean app before you sail    You'll want access to your daily schedule, reservations and onboard information, particularly when there is so much happening.      3. Book your must-see entertainment early    If there's a particular show you really want to see, don't leave it until the final night. Plan around the entertainment rather than trying to fit it in afterwards.      4. Don't try to do everything    This is probably the most important tip.    You won't experience every restaurant, activity, show and attraction in one sailing - and that's okay. Choose your absolute must-dos and leave room for spontaneous moments.      5. Visit popular attractions at quieter times    For the waterpark and other headline attractions, consider going earlier in the day or when other guests are ashore.      6. Give yourself time to discover the ship    Some of the best parts of Legend of the Seas aren't necessarily the things you planned to see. Allow yourself time to wander.      7. Make time for the entertainment    Don't think of the shows as something to do only when the weather isn't great. The productions are a major part of the onboard experience.      8. Choose your cabin carefully    Think about how you actually cruise. Do you want a balcony? Are you likely to spend most of your time around the pool? Would being closer to certain neighbourhoods make your holiday easier? Your cabin location can make a difference on a ship this large.      So, is Legend of the Seas worth booking?  After spending time onboard, yes - but the real question is whether it's the right Royal Caribbean ship for you.    If you want a cruise where there is always something happening, Legend of the Seas is an obvious contender.    If you're travelling with children or teenagers, the combination of Surfside, Thrill Island, Category 6 and the huge range of entertainment gives families plenty to fill their days with.    If you're travelling as a couple or with friends, there are also plenty of places to escape the family-focused areas and enjoy the ship at your own pace.    And if you're simply someone who loves exploring a new cruise ship, Legend of the Seas gives you a lot to discover.    It is currently the newest Icon Class ship, and Royal Caribbean has used it to build on what worked with Icon and Star while introducing its own dining and entertainment experiences.   For me, that's what made my time onboard so enjoyable.    I didn't feel like I'd seen everything by the time I left.    And honestly, that's probably the best sign of all.    Ready to experience Legend of the Seas?  Whether you're looking for a family holiday packed with things to do, a Mediterranean escape with plenty of time to explore ashore or simply want to experience one of Royal Caribbean's newest ships for yourself, Legend of the Seas is one to have on your radar.    From its first European season, the ship has been sailing Mediterranean itineraries from Barcelona and Rome, before heading to the Caribbean later in 2026.    Want to know what a cruise on Legend of the Seas could look like for you? RoyalUp Experiences: How Royal Caribbean’s New Bidding Programme Can Upgrade Your Cruise  You’ve booked your Royal Caribbean cruise, your flights are sorted, and the countdown is officially on. But what if you could make your holiday even more special by bidding for an exclusive experience before you sail?    That’s where RoyalUp Experiences comes in. The new programme gives selected Royal Caribbean guests the chance to make an offer on eligible experiences, such as private cabanas, daybeds, casitas and beach club products.    Unlike the traditional RoyalUp programme, which allows eligible guests to bid for a stateroom upgrade, RoyalUp Experiences is all about adding something extra to a cruise you’ve already booked.    The programme is currently being introduced on selected sailings, with invitations initially sent to select bookings on Icon of the Seas and Wonder of the Seas. So, if you’re already counting down to your cruise, here’s everything you need to know about how RoyalUp Experiences works, what you can bid on and what happens if your offer is accepted.    What is RoyalUp experiences?  RoyalUp Experiences allows selected Royal Caribbean guests to bid on eligible cruise experiences.    Rather than simply purchasing an experience at its standard price, invited guests can make an offer for the experiences available to their booking.    The programme currently includes experiences such as:  Cabanas Daybeds Casitas Beach club products Other eligible experiences  Royal Caribbean is also expanding the programme to include additional experience types, so the selection could grow over time.    It’s important to remember that not every cruise, booking, stateroom category or experience will be eligible.    How does RoyalUp experiences work?  If your booking is selected, Royal Caribbean will send you an invitation by email.    You can then view the experiences available to you and decide whether you want to submit an offer.    Once you've made an offer, Royal Caribbean reviews it individually. An offer isn't automatically accepted and receiving an invitation doesn't guarantee that you'll secure an experience.    If your offer is accepted, Royal Caribbean will notify you by email. Offers can be accepted from the time they are submitted until one day before your sailing's departure.    One of the more interesting aspects of the programme is that you may even be able to make an offer for an experience that is currently sold out.    Why? Availability can change if another guest cancels, giving Royal Caribbean the opportunity to fulfil an offer later.      What can you bid on?  The exact experiences available depend on your sailing and booking, but RoyalUp Experiences can include cabanas, daybeds, casitas and beach club products.    This could be particularly appealing if you're planning a cruise that includes a day at one of Royal Caribbean's destinations and want to make your time ashore feel a little more special.    The programme is still being expanded, meaning additional experience types could be introduced in the future.    Can you bid on a Royal Caribbean cabana?  Yes. Cabanas can be included in RoyalUp Experiences, giving selected guests another opportunity to secure a private space during their cruise.    Royal Caribbean offers different cabana experiences depending on the destination, including options at Perfect Day at CocoCay and Royal Beach Club Paradise Island.   However, successfully securing an experience doesn't necessarily mean you'll be able to choose its exact location.    If the experience requires an assigned location, Royal Caribbean will allocate it based on availability. A specific location or number cannot be guaranteed.    Who is eligible for RoyalUp experiences?  This is an important point because RoyalUp Experiences aren't available to every Royal Caribbean guest.    Royal Caribbean selects the cruises, bookings, stateroom categories and experiences that can participate.    During the initial phase, invitations have been sent only to selected bookings on Icon of the Seas and Wonder of the Seas.    So, even if you're sailing on one of these ships, you aren't guaranteed an invitation.    If you are selected, the invitation applies only to the guest and booking identified in the email. It is non-transferable.    What if you're travelling with family or friends?  Travelling together doesn't necessarily mean every guest will receive the same RoyalUp Experiences opportunity.    Royal Caribbean reviews bookings individually and may not invite or accept offers from every stateroom travelling together.    This is particularly worth remembering if your group has booked multiple cabins. One booking could receive an invitation while another does not.    Can you choose your cabana or daybed location?    Not necessarily.    For experiences that require an assigned location, Royal Caribbean will allocate the location based on availability.    That means you could successfully secure a cabana or daybed without being able to choose its exact position.    If location is particularly important to you, this is something to consider before submitting an offer.       Is RoyalUp experiences the same as RoyalUp?  No – although the names are similar, they are two different programmes.    RoyalUp allows eligible guests to bid for a stateroom upgrade.    RoyalUp Experiences is focused on additional experiences, including things such as cabanas, daybeds and beach club products.    So, if you receive a RoyalUp Experiences invitation, you're not being offered a chance to move into a better cabin. Instead, you're being given the opportunity to bid for an additional experience.    Are additional promotions included?  No. Offers made through RoyalUp Experiences do not include additional promotions.    The programme simply gives eligible guests the opportunity to submit an offer for selected experiences.    Is RoyalUp experiences worth it?  For guests who receive an invitation, it could be an exciting way to try to secure an experience they'd otherwise struggle to book.    The biggest attraction is the ability to choose what you're willing to offer, rather than automatically paying the standard price.    Of course, there's no guarantee you'll be successful. Your offer must be accepted, and the experience needs to be available.    But if there's a cabana, daybed or other experience you've had your eye on, RoyalUp Experiences could give you another chance to secure it.    RoyalUp experiences FAQs  Q - Is RoyalUp Experiences available to everyone?  A - No. Royal Caribbean is gradually expanding the programme and selects specific cruises, bookings, stateroom categories and experiences for participation.    Q - Which ships currently offer RoyalUp Experiences?  A - During the initial phase, invitations have been sent to selected bookings on Icon of the Seas and Wonder of the Seas.    Q - Can I bid on a sold-out experience?  A - You may be able to. Royal Caribbean can keep offers open for experiences that are currently sold out in case availability changes, such as following a cancellation.    Q - Can I transfer my RoyalUp Experiences invitation?  A - No. Invitations are non-transferable and apply only to the guest and booking identified in the invitation.    Q - When will I know if my offer has been accepted?  A - Royal Caribbean can accept offers from the time they are submitted until one day before the sailing's departure. If your offer is accepted, you'll be notified by email.    Ready to plan your next Royal Caribbean adventure? The Ultimate Guide To CocoCay View Royal Caribbean Cruise Deals In our ultimate guide to CocoCay we aim to answer every question about Royal Caribbean’s private island of CocoCay to help you plan your Perfect Day. We’ve gathered all the answers to common, and less common questions about CocoCay, plus have included a few exciting CocoCay secrets. So read on and get ready to enjoy your Perfect Day at CocoCay. Click to jump to a section... Getting to CocoCay Activities Price list Height restrictions Excursions Cabanas Food and drink Weather Safety Accessibility Good to know CocoCay secrets   CocoCay FAQs What is Perfect Day CocoCay? Perfect Day at CocoCay is a private island in the Bahamas which is exclusively for Royal Caribbean guests. Here you can chill out by the beautiful beaches and a huge lagoon pool, or enjoy thrilling activities like water slides or ziplining. Is CocoCay open? Yes! CocoCay is currently open. The island underwent a $200 million overhaul and reopened in May 2019. Since then, it closed for ten days due to Hurricane Dorian, but it is now open for business. What happened during the CocoCay renovation? CocoCay, formerly known as Little Stirrup Cay, underwent a $200 million makeover to add 125 acres of thrill and chill attractions. The project saw the addition of features such as the waterpark, pools, zip line and helium balloon as well as a pier to allow ships to dock without requiring tender boats. The rest of the project will see the addition of Maldives-style overwater cabanas at the South Beach side of the island, which are set to open in December 2019. How big is CocoCay? The island is less than a mile wide from west to east and less than 200 metres from north to south. In terms of walking distance, from the ship to the Arrivals Plaza is a six-minute walk. From here to the waterpark is three minutes and to the Chill Island area is five to ten minutes. Is CocoCay a man-made island? This depends on your definition of man-made. The island has always existed and was discovered along with other islands over 500 years ago. However, as it has been developed, parts of it are man-made including the pier, an artificial reef made of wrecks where the fish like to congregate and of course, things like water slides. How do you pronounce CocoCay? There is some debate over whether CocoCay is pronounced as ‘kay’ or ‘key’. The word ‘Cay’ is actually included in the name of many Caribbean islands, including private islands such as Castaway Cay, Half Moon Cay and Harvest Caye. According to the dictionary, a ‘cay’ is a small, low island, and this word is pronounced as ‘key’. In fact, Bahamian locals often pronounce ‘cay’ as ‘key’. However, more often than not, visitors and cruise line staff pronounce the ‘Cay’ in CocoCay as ‘kay’. So, either way is acceptable.>/p? CocoCay is located in the Bahamas, 65 miles northwest of Nassau. Can you fly to CocoCay? CocoCay does not have an airport, and the only way to access it is onboard a Royal Caribbean cruise ship. Which cruises go to CocoCay? Most cruises to CocoCay depart from Florida, although it is also possible to depart from other ports including New York, Baltimore, Galveston and New Orleans. Itineraries range in length from 2 nights to 14 nights. You can also visit CocoCay on selected transatlantic sailings. Which ships go to CocoCay? The majority of the ships in the Royal Caribbean fleet will call at CocoCay. You can click here to see sailings.   Is CocoCay a tender port? Not any more. Since the pier was built in May 2019, ships can now dock at CocoCay without the need for tender boats. Can you stay at CocoCay? Currently, CocoCay is only open for day visits. However, there are some cruises with later departures which allow guests to stay on the island until late in the evening. In the future, it may be possible to stay overnight on CocoCay, but currently, it is not. CocoCay activities What is there to do at CocoCay? CocoCay Weather Bad weather is rare in CocoCay. If it is too windy, certain attractions like the tallest waterslides, the zipline and the helium balloon ride may close. If this happens, guests will receive refunds. CocoCay temperature Like the rest of the Bahamas, CocoCay experiences warm weather all year round. The temperature is highest in the summer months between June and September when it reaches up to 32 °C. In the winter the daytime temperature averages 21°C. CocoCay water temperature The sea is always a pleasant temperature for swimming on CocoCay, averaging 28°C in the summer and 22°C in the winter, making it a similar temperature to the air. Watersports, snorkelling and swimming in the sea or the pools can be enjoyed all year round. CocoCay rain Rain rarely spoils anyone’s fun at CocoCay. In the winter it hardly rains at all. Although the rainfall is heavier in the summer months, showers tend to be short-lived and offer a welcome break from the summer heat. Is CocoCay safe? CocoCay is a very safe place to visit. As the only people on the island are cruise ship passengers and staff, crime is virtually non-existent. Lockers are provided for you to store any valuables. Lifeguards There are lifeguards at every pool, on every slide and on the beach. However, parents should still keep a watchful eye on their children near the water. Sharks Snorkellers may see the occasional shark at CocoCay as there are many sharks in the Bahamas. However, there has never been a shark attack here. The water is very clear and the sharks have good eyesight so can see that humans are not food. This is very different to places like California where the water is murky and people are dressed in wetsuits and flippers so they may be mistaken for seals. Jellyfish There may be some jellyfish in the waters around CocoCay, depending on the weather. These aren’t dangerous but could give a painful sting. If you are stung, head to the first aid station or the dive shack and they will give you some alcohol to spray on it which will stop the sting. Stingrays If you take an excursion from CocoCay to Stingray City you will undoubtedly see lots of friendly stingrays. It may also be possible to spot some in the sea off the beach at CocoCay. These creatures are harmless, but if you step on one it will whip up its stinging tail. You can avoid this by shuffling your feet through the sand as you walk so that they know to move out of your way. Accessibility The improvements to CocoCay during the refurbishment have made the resort much more accessible for those with limited mobility. If you’re considering visiting CocoCay with a wheelchair, you’ll find that most of the paths are paved. However, you may then need to transfer across sand to get to certain shaded areas or to the water. CocoCay has sand wheelchairs which are available to assist with this. Oasis Lagoon, the wave pool in the Thrill Waterpark and the infinity pool at Coco Beach Club all have chair lifts. CocoCay trams There are three accessible trams which run all day  to take guests to where they need to go on the island. Although most passengers will walk, the trams offer a great option for those who can’t walk 10-15 minutes from the ship to the furthest part of the island, or who prefer not to. Island tram - Every 15 minutes this tram circles the island, calling at the Arrivals Plaza, the Up, Up & Away Balloon, Oasis Lagoon and Chill Island. From 31st January 2020, the tram will also stop at South Beach and the Coco Beach Club. Pier Tram - This runs a continuous service between the ship and the Arrivals Plaza. Coco Beach Tram - A tram dedicated to guests of Coco Beach Club will also run every 10 minutes between the ship and Coco Beach Club.   CocoCay for toddlers CocoCay is a great destination for toddlers. Parents are welcome to bring pushchairs to the island. Baby changing is available and there is plenty of shade with free beach umbrellas. Toddlers will love Splashaway Bay and Captain Jill's Galleon. Oasis Lagoon has gradual entry points just like a beach. Swimming nappies are allowed in all pools as well as on all beaches and in the sea. Toddlers are permitted to ride the Up, Up & Away Balloon when accompanied by adults and there is no charge for children under four for this experience. Good to know Here are the answers to some more commonly asked questions about CocoCay… Towels Complimentary towels are available onboard your ship and it’s recommended to bring these to the island with you and then return them to the ship. There are also two towel exchange stations on the island where you can swap your towels for fresh ones as needed. Guests who have rented cabanas will have towels at the cabana and they can leave them there on departure. Lockers Lockers are available throughout the island. You can access them using your SeaPass. Sun loungers and umbrellas Sun loungers and umbrellas are available free of charge across the island. Even on busy days there is no shortage of places to sit in the sun or in the shade. Life jackets On CocoCay, life jackets or swim vests are required for guests under a certain height when using certain slides or pools. These are available free of charge Floating beach mats Floating mats are available to hire for around $13, or come included in the cost of certain cabanas or day beds. Alternatively, you can bring your own inflatable lilo. Drinking age Guests must be 21 years old or older to drink alcohol on CocoCay. Smoking Smoking (including e-cigarettes) is only permitted in designated smoking areas on CocoCay. Wildlife Wild animals to spot on CocoCay include iguanas, small lizards, seagulls and chickens as well as marine life like turtles, barracuda, sting rays, sharks and fish. Drones Guests are not allowed to use aerial drones on CocoCay or on any of Royal Caribbean’s cruise ships. You can take a drone on the ship to use ashore outside of the main port areas, but it must be stored in your stateroom at all times. Shopping On CocoCay you’ll find a Straw Market which is a traditional Bahamian market selling straw crafts, souvenirs and gifts. The market is run by locals so your cruise card won’t be accepted here. You’ll need to bring cash in the form of US dollars or Bahamian dollars if you want to purchase anything from the Straw Market. What currency is used at CocoCay? You can use your cruise card to pay for everything on the island, with the exception of souvenirs from the Straw Market. As the market is run by locals you can only pay for items in cash. US dollars and Bahamian dollars are both accepted and have the same value ($1USD = B$1) Weddings It’s possible to get married on CocoCay whilst your cruise is docked at the island. Contact us if you'd like any more information. CocoCay Map You can download a pdf map of CocoCay here. You'll also find a paper version of the map in your stateroom the night before you arrive at CocoCay. The Royal Caribbean App is also very useful to help you find your way around the island. What can you no longer do on CocoCay? Since CocoCay was revamped in 2019, there’s so much more to do on the island. However, there are some things which are no longer available. These include: Massage – Spa services are no longer available on the island Hair braiding – It’s no longer possible to get your hair braided on CocoCay. You probably won’t have time anyway. Better to get it done somewhere like Nassau Nature trail – Before the development of Cococay, this was a popular activity, but it has been discontinued Fishing – There are no opportunities for fishing trips from CocoCay and bringing your own fishing gear is discouraged. There are better ports of call for fishing in the Bahamas Private area for suite guests – Before the development of CocoCay, guests staying in suites on the ship had their own area. Now, no enjoy a VIP experience, you can book into the Coco Beach club, regardless of your stateroom type. Lazy river – CocoCay has a water park but has never had a lazy river How long does a Perfect Day on CocoCay last? The exact timings of arrival and departure from CocoCay vary depending on the itinerary. Guests usually disembark the ship after breakfast and return in the late afternoon. Late night stays at CocoCay Royal Caribbean are offering very limited number of sailings with late night stays on CocoCay on board Navigator of the Seas. Guests can stay on the island until 10 pm and enjoy a party night with a barbecue, fireworks and lasers. Two visits to CocoCay Royal Caribbean offers a wide selection of 4-night cruises which have two stops at CocoCay. Sailing on board Navigator of the Seas from Miami or Mariner of the Seas from Orlando, these cruises have two days at CocoCay and a sea day. Enjoy twice the thrills, double chills or a day of each. Whatever you choose, you probably still won’t quite find time to do all that there is to offer! CocoCay secrets Psst! Here are a few secrets to make your time on CocoCay even more enjoyable. Don't tell anyone. Secret chicken sandwich – You won't find this item on any menu but cruisers are raving about it! Head to the Snack Shack and ask for parmesan chicken on a bun. Then, add a side of mozzarella cheese sticks and marinara sauce on top, along with lettuce, tomatoes, pickles and mayo from the salad bar. Secret ice cream sandwich – Grab two chocolate chip cookies and head to the self-serve ice-cream machine to create your own ice-cream sandwich. Avoid the queues – The best times to visit the waterpark for the shortest queue times are before 11am and after 3pm. Head to Daredevil’s Peak first, then ride it again right before you head back to the ship. Save on activities – It's advisable to pre-book all your CocoCay activities before your cruise. The prices can go up and down, but it's always cheaper to book online via Royal Caribbean's Cruise Planner rather than on-board the ship. Save your energy – Keep an eye out for the complimentary solar-powered trams to save your steps. Your Guide to Private Islands in the Caribbean

Your Guide to Private Islands in the Caribbean

Your Guide to Private Islands in the Caribbean View Caribbean Cruise Deals Caribbean cruises are already considered the peak of luxury by many, but some cruise lines have amped up the wow factor with incredible private islands. These stunning islands in the sun are packed with amazing activities, gorgeous scenery and fantastic food. But best of all, access to them is exclusive to passengers of the cruise line that owns them. How many Private Islands does the Caribbean have? The 1.06 million square miles that make up the Caribbean contains over seven thousand islands. With only about a hundred of these islands being inhabited, that leaves plenty to be bought and privately owned- which is likely why the Caribbean makes up 40% of the global private island market. But which Caribbean islands have cruises?   Does Royal Caribbean have their own Private Island? Royal Caribbean is the cruise line most synonymous with Caribbean Cruises and boasts not one but two private islands in the Caribbean with each one having its own special appeal. Perfect Day at CocoCay Probably the most famous of the Cruise Line Private Islands, Royal Caribbean’s CocoCay in the Bahamas is a dream holiday destination. Adrenaline junkies will adore the Thrill Waterpark, which boasts the 135 foot tall Devil’s Peak, North America’s tallest waterslide. Those wanting to reach new heights in a more relaxed manner can take in magnificent views of the island from the Up, Up & Away helium balloon. And for complete serenity, pay a visit to Chill Island and book one of CocoCay’s floating beach Cabanas. Hunger is never an issue on CocoCay, with a beach barbeque, three snack shacks, and the delicious offerings of Captain Jack’s Bar. As if all that wasn’t enough, CocoCay also offers the largest freshwater pool in the Bahamas and the largest wave pool in the Caribbean. If a private island isn’t quite exclusive enough for you, you can also book into the ultra-exclusive Coco Beach Club.   Labadee Located on the North Coast of Haiti, Labadee is a capable rival to its Bahamas based brother. Soar over the island on the 2, 600 foot Dragon’s Breath zipline or scream with terror on the Dragon’s Tail coaster. Tips for enjoying Cruise Line Private Islands You’ll undoubtedly want to make the most of your time on one of these island paradises, so we have a few tips to help you do just that. Know what’s included and what’s extra Not all of the delights of private islands are included in the cost of your cruise. Umbrellas for shade, certain eateries and water-sports can all cost extra, so make sure you know which amenities charge an additional fee before you go.  If you want to avoid paying any extra fees, consider bringing your own equipment like snorkels, beach toys and means of shade. Book in advance If you dream of relaxing in a private cabana or beach villa, you’ll need to reserve one ASAP, either whilst on-board the ship or before you even embark on your cruise. Beach umbrellas and water-sports equipment should be reserved as early as possible too. Lotion up Don’t let the excitement of a private island distract you from the cardinal rule of any holiday in the sun. Apply sun cream as often as possible to prevent your amazing day being marred by sunburn or sunstroke. Choose your spot carefully Picking a spot on the beach to set up camp requires a lot of consideration. Areas of beach nearest to where the ship docks will become chaotic and busy in moments- so catch an open air tram to a more suitable location. You should also think about how shaded you want your spot to be, and what island amenities you’d like to be nearest to. Bring insect repellent Bug bites might be the only negative of Caribbean Cruises- avoid them by regularly spraying your ankles with insect repellent. Wear Cotton One of the biggest appeals of Caribbean cruises is the glorious heat- but that heat can become stifling if you aren’t wearing a breathable material like cotton.
